Das Virus SARS-CoV-2 (Abkürzung für englisch severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2) wird als Schweres-akutes-Atemwegssyndrom-Coronavirus Typ 2 bezeichnet, umgangssprachlich auch (neuartiges) Coronavirus. Dieses dem SARS-Erreger ähnliche Betacoronavirus mit wahrscheinlich zoonotischem Ursprung wurde Anfang 2020 als Auslöser der Infektionskrankheit COVID-19 identifiziert.COVID-19 trat laut Chinas Regierung erstmals Ende 2019 in der chinesischen Stadt Wuhan als „Lungenkrankheit unbekannter Genese“ in Erscheinung. Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) nannte COVID-19 am 30. Januar 2020 eine „gesundheitliche Notlage von internationaler Tragweite“. Da die Erkrankung sich weltweit ausbreitete, wurde die Ausbreitung von COVID-19 am 11. März 2020 als Pandemie eingestuft (siehe COVID-19-Pandemie).Das Virus ist zwischen 60 und 140 Nanometern groß und wird in der Regel im nahen menschlichen Kontakt durch Tröpfchen und Aerosole übertragen. Für die weltweite Ausbreitung spielten hierbei besonders größere Übertragungsereignisse, sogenannte Superspreading-Events, eine wichtige Rolle.Das Virus hat mittlerweile zahlreiche Varianten mit Mutationen ausgebildet. Klinisch-diagnostische und epidemiologische Erfahrungen sprechen dafür, dass Varianten möglicherweise schwerere Krankheitsverläufe bewirken könnten. Die Mitte 2021 weltweit grassierende Delta-Variante hingegen vermehrt sich schneller, wird leichter von Mensch zu Mensch übertragen, und die Impfungen wirken laut WHO kaum gegen diese Kontagiosität.
